  Ich schnitt das Rauchfleisch wie auch das Brot mit dem Messer, (...) das in der Schwarzen Küche (...) an der Wand hing. W. getraute sich nicht mit ihm umzugehen, er fürchtete sich sogar, es nur in die Hand zu nehmen, (...) die ungemein feine, die >philosophische Ziselierung< (W.) auf beiden Seiten der scharfen Klinge (...) interessierte uns, gefiel uns . . . W. phantasierte oft in der Nacht um das Messer herum . . . er fürchtete, daß es in seiner Hand nur zur >Zufügung sonst nicht geschehenden Schmerzes< gebraucht werde, in solcher Vorstellung lebte er, was das Messer betrifft, er fürchtete, mit dem >unserem Onkel gehörenden Kunstwerk aus Augsburg<, sobald es in seiner Hand wäre, zuzustechen . . .
